Getting Started

Thanks for calling Counseling of Portland and taking that first step.  It’s not always easy to ask for help.

We so glad you’ve contacted us to support you in your desire to bring important changes to your life and feel better. We will be there every step of the way.

When you first call

Our office managers  will warmly ask more about your situation and what you are looking for in counseling.  They will answer any questions you have.  They will help you find the therapist best suited to  your needs.

Insurance

We will inquire about your health insurance and get the details so we can check your benefits.  Most people find it helpful to know in advance what their insurance covers so that know what to expect.  Depending on your insurance, we will set up an authorization with your insurance plan to insure complete coverage for you.

Schedule Your Appointment

We will schedule an appointment with one of our warm and caring therapists at a time that is convenient for you.

Send A Welcome Email

This email will include the time and date of your appointment , your therapists name and contact info and how to find our office.  It will also contain some forms:

  • The first form has information about your rights as a client of ours, how confidentiality work and the process of therapy.
  • We also like to know a little bit about your history, and what strengths and challenges you’re bringing to therapy.

Please download these forms, print them out at home so you can take your time filling them out at your convenience.  Many find this process helpful to review their life, clarify what brings them to therapy and what they want to focus on.

Your First Appointment

When you come in for your first appointment, your therapist will greet you in the waiting room, show you around and then start the wonderful process of getting to know you and helping you to feel better.

Please bring your intake paperwork, your insurance card and photo ID (our insurance companies ask that we verify identity).

Some people like to arrive a few minutes early to settle in, relax and gather their thoughts and feelings, questions and experiences to bring into the session.

At the beginning of the session, we will collect your payment if you have one.  We are happy to take cash, check or credit card.  We have an encrypted system for storing credit card numbers for your safety.

Most sessions last about 55 minutes.

We’re Here To Help

If you have any questions at any time, we’re happy to answer.  Just give us a call or email us.  We are so glad you’ve taken this important step to create a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life.  And we’re honored to be part of supporting you.
